When my grandson Jonathon made a joke about a dead dog quilt, I didn't dream that there would be such a thing. We were all sitting around talking after Christmas dinner about a wall hanging that I was making for one of my other grandsons, Brent, and Jonathon spoke up very loud and dead serious, "Hey, Grams, we have probably had 25 to 30 dogs that have died over the years. Why don't you make me a dead dog quilt with all their pictures on it?" The reason he asked for this is because Brent's little dog had gotten run over and killed before I could get the wall hanging made with her picture on it. When Jonathon mentioned it we all got a big laugh from it. Now this was a child that loved all of his dogs and took the idea of a quilt very seriously but we just sort of laughed it off and went on with our conversation but assured him that we were laughing at his idea only and not at him. I thought to myself, now that is the dumbest thing I have ever heard of but maybe if I have some spare time I can explore the idea. Yeah right. I didn't want to hurt his feelings so I agreed to think about it and let him know if I really would do it, or not.
